A Notable Children's Trade Book in the Field of Social Studies " The keys are sophisticated language and hierarchically ordered cognitive processes allowing (mature) humans to evaluate their own actions, motives, goals, and rational and moral principles. James is on his most daring mission yet: to smack down the world's most powerful drug lord. It means hitting the streets, where the dealers work, and it's a vicious business. But James is going to take it down...from the top. `Divided Houses` is a tale of contrasting fortunes. Hadoop (2016 Edition) : Questions and Answers free pdf In the last decade of his reign Edward III, a senile, pathetic symbol of England's past conquests, was condemned to see them overrun by the armies of his enemies. When he died, in 1377, he was succeeded by a vulnerable child, who was destined to grow into a neurotic and unstable adult presiding over a divided nation. Meanwhile France entered upon one of the most glittering periods of her medieval history, years of power and ceremony, astonishing artistic creativity and famous warriors making their reputations as far afield as Naples, Hungary and North Africa. Contemporaries in both countries believed that they were living through memorable times: times of great wickedness and great achievement, of collective mediocrity but intense personal heroism, of extremes of wealth and poverty, fortune and failure. At a distance of six centuries, as Jonathan Sumption skilfully and meticulously shows, it is possible to agree with all of these judgments.

The Point of Attack or How to Start the Photoplay : One of a Series of Lectures Especially Prepared for Student-Member's of the Palmer Plan (Classic Reprint)

Description

Excerpt from The Point of Attack or How to Start the Photoplay: One of a Series of Lectures Especially Prepared for Student-Member's of the Palmer Plan Mr. Badger is one of those men of foresight and vision who, realizing the limitless future of moving pictures, identified himself with photoplay production in the earlier years of the art. Over a decade ago Mr. Badger tried his hand at freelance photoplay writing, only to find that he was dealing with a new form of expression and that he faced the necessity of learning the rudiments of screen plot construction right at the start. After a preparatory period of intensive study he attacked the work of photoplay writing with persistence and precision, progressing as staff writer with the old Lubin Company, then with Universal, Keystone, Sennett-Paramount, and finally with the Goldwyn organization, being chosen from a host of possibilities, and appointed director of feature productions, a position which he now occupies. Mr. Badger has not only kept pace with the constantly changing methods of production, but has usually managed to be a step ahead of the field. He directed Mable Normand in "Sis Hopkins" and other features; Modge Kennedy in "Friend Husband," "A Perfect Lady," and "Mother of Mine," and his production of "Jubilo," starring Will Rogers, was one of the successes of the season of 1919-20. The clear and thoughtful manner in which he has dealt with "The Point Of Attack" is an illustration of the quality of mentality that he injects into all of his work. Theatre and Globalization

Description

What is globalization? What role is there for the theatre in a globalizing world? This original and provocative book explores the contribution that theatre has made to our slowly evolving consciousness of our world as a whole. Drawing on sources from Aeschylus to The Lion King, Chekhov to Complicite, tragedy to advertising, the book argues for theatre's importance as a site of resistance to the ruthless spread of the global market. 'one of the best books about secret intelligence work ever written' Peter Hopkirk. Colonel F. M. Bailey, whose extraordinary adventures are told here, was long accused by Moscow of being a British master-spy sent in 1918 to overthrow the Bolsheviks in Central Asia. As a result, he enjoyed many years after his Hist Pocket Ancient Greece Grade 4-6+ free download pdf death an almost legendary reputation there - that of half-hero, half-villain. In this remarkable book he tells of the perilous game of cat-and-mouse, lasting sixteen months, which he played with the Bolshevik secret police, the dreaded Cheka. At one point, using a false identity, he actually joined the ranks of the latter, who unsuspectingly sent him to Bokhara to arrest himself. Told with almost breathtaking understatement, Bailey's narrative - set in a region once more back in the headlines - reads like vintage Buchan.

Claudio Magris,Iain Halliday: Microcosms

Microcosms

Description

In his acclaimed work Danube, Claudio Magris painted a vast canvas stretching from the source of the river to the Black Sea. Now he focuses on the tiny borderlands of Istria and Italy where he was born and where he has lived most intensely. From the forests of Monte Nevoso, to the hidden valleys of the Tyrol, to a Trieste cafe, Microcosms pieces together a mosaic of stories - comic, tragic, picaresque, nostalgic - from life's minor characters. Their worlds might be small, but they are far from minimalist: in them flashes the great, the meaningful, the unrepeatable significance of every existence. Microcosms won the Strega Prize in 1997.

Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress is an enchanting tale that captures the magic of reading and the wonder of romantic awakening. An immediate international bestseller, it tells the story of two hapless city boys exiled to a remote mountain village for re-education during China s infamous Cultural Revolution. There the two friends meet the daughter of the local tailor and discover a hidden stash of Western classics in Chinese translation. As they flirt with the seamstress and secretly devour these banned works, the two friends find transit from their grim surroundings to worlds they never imagined." #1 New York Times bestselling author J. D. Robb takes us to the New York City of 2060, where Lieutenant Eve Dallas faces down a cop killer... Amaryllis Coltraine may have recently transferred to the New York City police force from Atlanta, but she s been a cop long enough to know how to defend herself against an assailant. When she s taken Microcosms download ebook pdf down just steps away from her apartment, killed with her own weapon, for Eve the victim isn t just one of us. Eve starts questioning everyone while her husband, Roarke, digs into computer data on the dead woman s life back in Atlanta. To their shock, they discover a connection between this case and their own painful, shadowy pasts. The truth will need to be uncovered one layer at a time, starting with the box that arrives at Cop Central addressed to Eve, containing Coltraine s guns, badge, and a note from her killer: You can have them back. Maybe someday soon, I ll be sending yours to somebody else. But Eve Dallas doesn t take too kindly to personal threats, and she is going to break this case, whatever it takes. And that s a promise."

However, the Senate overlooked one important fact: the land territory is home to the Cheyenne Nation, who are determined to defend their land.

Daniel O'Brien: How to Fight Presidents

How to Fight Presidents

Description

Make no mistake: Our founding fathers were more bandanas-and-muscles than powdered-wigs-and-tea. As a prisoner of war, Andrew Jackson walked several miles barefoot across state lines while suffering from smallpox and a serious head wound received when he refused to polish the boots of the soldiers who had taken him captive. "He was thirteen years old. "A few decades later, he became the first popularly elected president and served the nation, pausing briefly only to beat a would-be assassin with a cane to within an inch of his life. Theodore Roosevelt had asthma, was blind in one eye, survived multiple gunshot wounds, had only one regret (that there were no wars to fight under his presidency), and was the first U.S. president to win the Medal of Honor, which he did "after he died. "Faced with the choice, George Washington actually preferred the sound of bullets whizzing by his head in battle "over the sound of silence. " And now these men these hallowed leaders of the free world want to kick your ass. Plenty of historians can tell you which president had the most effective economic strategies, and which president helped shape our current political parties, but can any of them tell you what to do if you encounter Chester A. Arthur in a bare-knuckled boxing fight? This book will teach you how to be better, stronger, faster, and more deadly than the most powerful (and craziest) men in history. You re welcome."

The Bourbon Kings 01

Description

The #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Black Dagger Brotherhood delivers the first novel in an enthralling new series set amid the shifting dynamics of a Southern family defined by wealth and privilege—and compromised by secrets, deceit, and scandal....   For generations, the Bradford family has worn the mantle of kings of the bourbon capital of the world, affording them prestige and privilege—and a hard-won division of class on their sprawling estate, Easterly. Upstairs, a dynasty that appears to play by the rules of good fortune and taste. Downstairs, the staff works tirelessly to maintain the impeccable Bradford facade.   For Lizzie King, Easterly’s head gardener, crossing that divide nearly ruined her life. Falling in love with Tulane, the prodigal son of the bourbon dynasty, was nothing she intended—and their breakup proved her instincts right. Now, after two years, Tulane is coming home, and he’s bringing the past with him. No one will be left unmarked: not Tulane’s beautiful and ruthless wife; not his brother, whose bitterness knows no bounds; and not the Bradford patriarch, a man with few morals, fewer scruples, and many terrible secrets. As family tensions ignite, Easterly and all its inhabitants are thrown into the grips of an irrevocable transformation, and only the cunning will survive.

Breadline Britain: The Rise of Mass Poverty

Description

Poverty in Britain is at post-war highs and - even with economic growth -is set to increase yet further. Food bank queues are growing, levels of severe deprivation have been rising, and increasing numbers of children are left with their most basic needs unmet. Based on exclusive access to the largest ever survey of poverty in the UK, and its predecessor surveys in the 1980s and 1990s, Stewart Lansley and Joanna Mack track changes in deprivation and paint a devastating picture of the reality of poverty today and its causes. Shattering the myth that poverty is the fault of the poor and a generous benefit system, they show that the blame lies with the massive social and economic upheaval that has shifted power from the workforce to corporations and swelled the ranks of the working poor, a group increasingly at the mercy of low-pay, zero-hour contracts and downward social mobility. The high levels of poverty in the UK are not ordained but can be traced directly to the political choices taken by successive governments. Lansley and Mack outline an alternative economic and social strategy that is both perfectly feasible and urgently necessary if we are to reverse the course of the last three decades.

Kent Haruf,Alan Kent Haruf: Our Souls at Night

Our Souls at Night

Description

A spare yet eloquent, bittersweet yet inspiring story of a man and a woman who, in advanced age, come together to wrestle with the events of their lives and their hopes for the imminent future. In the familiar setting of Holt, Colorado, home to all of Kent Haruf s inimitable fiction, Addie Moore pays an unexpected visit to a neighbor, Louis Waters. Her husband died years ago, as did his wife, and in such a small town they naturally have known of each other for decades; in fact, Addie was quite fond of Louis s wife. His daughter lives hours away in Colorado Springs, her son even farther away in Grand Junction, and Addie and Louis have long been living alone in houses now empty of family, the nights so terribly lonely, especially with no one to talk with. Their brave adventures their pleasures and their difficulties are hugely involving and truly resonant, making "Our Souls at Night" the perfect final installment to this beloved writer s enduring contribution to American literature. "From the Hardcover edition.""

How should we treat non-human animals? In this immensely powerful and influential book (now with a new introduction by Sapiens author Yuval Noah Harari), the renowned moral philosopher Peter Singer addresses this simple question with trenchant, dispassionate reasoning. Accompanied by the disturbing evidence of factory farms and laboratories, his answers triggered the birth of the animal rights movement. "An extraordinary book which has had extraordinary effects...Widely known as the bible of the animal liberation movement." (Independent on Sunday). In the decades since this landmark classic first appeared, some public attitudes to animals may have changed but our continued abuse of SS Great Britain: An Insight into the Design, Construction and Operation of Brunel's Famous Passenger Ship download ebook animals in factory farms and as tools for research shows that the underlying ideas Singer exposes as ethically indefensible are still dominating the way we treat animals. As Yuval Harari's brilliantly argued introduction makes clear, this book is as relevant now as the day it was written.

SS Great Britain: An Insight into the Design, Construction and Operation of Brunel's Famous Passenger Ship

Description

Isambard Kingdom Brunel's SS Great Britain was a world first when she was launched at Bristol in 1843. This uniquely successful passenger ship design brought together the leading technologies of the day (screw propeller, iron hull and 1,000hp steam engine) to transform world travel. She was a successful ship and continued sailing until 1886, travelling 32 times around the world and nearly one million miles at sea. Great Britain was finally abandoned in the Falkland Islands in 1937 but in 1970 an ambitious salvage effort brought her home to Bristol, where today she is conserved.
